Utah State Risk Management requires that cheer coaches follow the NFHS spirit safety rules.
We as cheer coaches have a responsibility to make Utah State Risk Management aware of coaches and teams who violate the sportsmanship and safety policies. Rule violations affect us all and can have a damaging effect on cheer in Utah. It is in the best interest of the sport that rule violations are reported quickly.
We all need to be held accountable to uphold the standards and rules provided to us by
the NFHS and Utah State Risk Management.
Sportsmanship
Cheer coaches must personally demonstrate positive sportsmanship and teach positive sportsmanship to athletes.
Sportsmanship is considered exhibiting behaviors that bring a positive image to cheerleading and athletics.
This may include but is not limited to:
*Greeting opposing cheerleaders at games and events.
*Supporting other teams at competitions, games, and events.
*Holding athletes accountable for appropriate dress at all events.
*Following appropriate procedures in addressing questions and feedback with State/Region Competition directors.
Safety
Cheer coaches must personally demonstrate and teach a strong approach to safety in cheerleading.
This may include but is not limited to:
* Following the “perfection before progression” approach to teaching and coaching all cheerleading skills.
*Complete required yearly Safety Clinics sponsored by Utah State Risk Management.
* Following ALL rules of the NFHS Spirit rules and rules decided on by Utah State Risk Management.
The following procedures will be followed for teams who are reported violating the NFHS Sprit rules or Utah State Risk Management rules for cheer. A friendly reminder email of the rules will be sent to the coach of the team, listing the violation that was reported. If a team is reported a second time, their name and violation will be passed on to the director of the UCTCA and depending on the severity, that coach may be reported to State Risk Management. Keeping coaches accountable to the rules benefits all of us.
Strict adherence to the rules will insure that the sport of cheer and all of its athletic elements are around for years to come.
